Dr. Elizabeth Michaels loves her job of taking care of children and when she decides to help out in another country, she has no idea of what to expect. She is approached by government people right before she leaves and it has nothing to do with her original plans. Little did she know that she would be caring for Shir directly, and her unprofessional feelings kept coming to mind distracting her during their escape.
Injured Agent Shir Mansouri must escape the people hunting him before they torture him for the information he has. Now that he is in the care of Dr. Michaels, his mind is having a hard time staying focused on getting out of the country. After he delivers his message to her that they would be leaving soon, he peeks in on her changing her clothes and realizes that it was a mistake on his part. Being a prideful man is typical behavior for him and he doesn’t listen to her when they are in danger, causing more problems.
Silk Stealth is an intriguing and well-written suspense and I wasn’t surprised at the traditional customs forced on Elizabeth. What did surprise me was how much she seemed to enjoy the change. This story is fast-paced from beginning to the end and if you are not paying attention, you will miss something important. These two characters did not suspect they would care so deeply for each other and when they become more than traveling companions, it became harder to focus on escaping across the border to safety.
Carolina Valdez has written a wonderful book of customs, family loyalty and love combined with espionage. I was very impressed with her descriptions of the clothing worn by the characters. So much so, that I wanted to touch some of the fabrics in person; to feel the texture and weave. There was a lot of closeness among the family in the towns where they stayed, and it seemed to affect Elizabeth, who had not had that kind of attention in her own life. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
