Sammy has horrible taste in men and his latest, William, is one of the worst, leaving his small body battered and bruised and his self-esteem in tatters. When Sammy’s best friend Jason realizes that another boyfriend from hell is beating him, Jason moves Sammy into the apartment he shares with his lover, cop Harry. Sammy hates feeling like a failure…again, but reluctantly accepts the help he needs, except this time Harry’s best friend, Peter, also rides to the rescue.

Sammy is a natural nurturer, taking care of and loving the people important to him, to the detriment of his own health. He wants a home and family so badly that he makes bad choices in the hopes of finding the happiness he craves, William being his latest case in point. Peter, on the other hand, is everything that Sammy needs in a lover. He’s kind, caring, protective, and most importantly he’s able to give Sammy what he needs sexually. Unbeknownst to Harry, Peter is a leather man in disguise, calm and easy going in public, but in control in private and a long time participant in the BDSM lifestyle. No matter how happy Sammy is with Peter, with so many disastrous relationships in his past, Sammy is terrified he’ll mess this one up to.

The challenges just keep coming in this new and growing relationship. Harry doesn’t understand the BDSM lifestyle, Sammy is working himself to death at a job he hates, and ex-boyfriend William doesn’t know when to call it quits and leave Sammy in peace to enjoy his new life. Can these new lovers’s work through their problems, or will the pain and fear of the past tear them apart?

Sammy’s Place is Seam Michael’s newest release in his Between Friends series and as much as I liked the last one, When Harry Met Jason, I enjoyed this one even more. Through the course of their relationship they have many things to overcome, and despite Sammy’s low self-esteem and painful past, Peter stays steadfast, determined and patient, all things Sammy desperately needs. It was wonderful learning how Peter and Sammy got together, how they overcame Sammy’s difficult past and let their common interests lead to love, understanding and a future they both wanted, inside the bedroom and out.

Sammy, with friends Jason and Harry was great, but when you add Peter to the mix, you have four friends who together can do almost anything. In this case, they give Sammy the support, love and care he needs to heal from years of emotional and physical abuse. With Peter, he has the chance at a life he’s always wanted, but never thought he deserved. Peter is his light leading to a future he craves, but through it all Peter leads by example, always allowing Sammy to make decisions at the speed he’s comfortable with. It’s never really revealed what Peter’s age is, but it seemed clear to me that he was a bit older, settled, and well aware of what he needs and wants in a partner, and he wants scared, damaged little Sammy.
