Archeologist Reese Whittaker had been interested in Babylonian and Sumerian culture and artifacts for years. She leads a boring academic life until she’s attacked by a horde of demons and rescued by a big, black-leather clad man. She doesn’t know what to do or what to believe aside from the terrifying reality that someone or something is trying to kill her. Being told what to do by a gorgeous pureblood warrior is almost more than her mind can comprehend, but being jerked into his world enlightens her to the stuff of myth and legend, that just happens to be true.
Dagan is a Time Walker, a warrior sworn to protect humans and one human female in particular…Reese Whittaker. He’s the son of the Air-God Enlil, and Ninmah, the Earth-Mother Goddess and he travels through time defending the human descendants of his ancient race. When he’s assigned to protect Reese, he can’t deny their nearly overwhelming attraction, despite the prohibition against contact, but when her life is threatened he’s forced to physically intervene. Being with Reese triggers his fury, the intense sexual need to bond with a life mate. The problem is that another is interested in Reese, and not in a good way. Underworld leader Kur is attracted to her powerful life force and would like nothing better than to drain her dry, thumbing his nose not only at Dagan, but the deities of the Dilmun as well. Dagan’s risking everything to be with Reese, because if the pantheon discovers his mate is a human, it could mean torture for him and death for her.
The Fury is the first release in an exciting new paranormal series, Time Walker, by Sloan McBride. This entertaining story mixes ancient myth and legend with contemporary life, turns old concepts of Babylonian and Sumerian cultures and history on its ear, and comes up with new and intriguing ideas that race this story forward at breakneck speed. It’s clearly written, with great background descriptions that never feel like an information dump, instead leading the story often in a new and surprising direction.
There have been times in the past when I’ve read a book that interjects words that I needed to refer to the provided glossary to understand, but Ms. McBride didn’t leave me feeling the need to stop what I was doing, to refer to its definition. No, instead the flow here is smooth, giving me a story understanding that I appreciated, without being preachy or long-winded.
As far as I’m concerned the pacing for this story is perfect, leading the reader on a rollercoaster thrill ride of demon fighting, cultural understanding and the blossoming of new and forbidden love. Reese is a little hard-headed and reckless considering that demons are out to kill her, but that doesn’t make her less likable…and Dagan…he’s a hunk. Get out a fan for their love scenes because the sexual tension only gets hotter the longer they’re together. Add in great secondary characters, and you have all the things needed to propel this wonderful series into the future. I look forward to the next release. Read and enjoy!
