Amber is a carrier of the Cleaven gene. She slashed her stepfather’s face, was incarcerated, and has progressed to level eight as a counselor on a prison ship. She believes she caused her mother’s death by being a wild and unmanageable child.

Jaden is a hunky transport guard, bringing prisoners to the ship.

The story starts with a science fiction atmosphere. The mysterious genetic makeup is never explained. Those who have it and commit crimes are automatically placed on prison ships in the Atlantic. They are treated and move up to new “levels.” Many of them have highly developed senses. Some have a heightened sense of smell; some, like Jaden, can read emotions.
There’s a lot of action. Two sinister characters manage to enter the ship with devious motives, causing death and serious damage to the vessel.

Yet things are resolved in a rather simplistic motion, and the story ends happily ever after in a homey contemporary mode. It left me a bit confused, with several unanswered questions. I did not find the characters believable, and much of the futuristic setting seemed inconsistent. I would have appreciated a more definite time frame and an explanation of how these prison ships came into existence. Author Perazzini has some creative ideas, but the tale needs more specific direction.
