Amanda Stevenson’s parents have always been overbearing but she’s been able to keep the peace, mainly by giving in to their every demand. This time however, her parents are using the thing most precious to Amanda as ammunition – her education. Her parents may not like her choice of college but Amanda won’t budge this time, especially with friend and former professor Jack Navis in her corner.
When Jack sees the hold Amanda’s parents have over her, he has to do something to stop her from throwing her promising future away, just to please them. He makes her an offer she can’t refuse - he proposes! It was only ever supposed to be a way of keeping his dear friend close to him until she finished her education, then they planned to get a divorce and go back to the way things were. However their plans fly out the window when they have to put on a show for the in-laws. Kissing a friend shouldn’t feel this good…
An Innocent Proposition is just my cup of tea. An interesting plot that moves along at the perfect pace and very likable characters made this story a very enjoyable read. The inexperience of both Amanda and Jack is portrayed well and it led to some very intimate moments that I felt privileged to witness. I really was rooting for them to make things work, despite their misunderstandings. They were both trying so hard to think of what’s best for the other that they were winding themselves up in all sorts of knots and it was wonderfully frustrating at times.
The initial premise was somewhat difficult to accept; the phrases “uh oh” and “this can’t end well” spring to mind as Amanda and Jack decide their only option is to marry. Jack’s family background seemed to be brushed aside too as we are teased with the trouble Jack has had with his father but this is never really resolved. It might have been nice to explore Jack’s family a little more so that I could form an opinion of them. These are minor complaints however and as the relationship progressed, I couldn’t put the book down.
